INTRODUCING: EP-21 Aerosol for Outboards and Outdrives

EP-21 release coating is now available in aerosol packaging! Available in silver blue (Yamaha®-like) and metallic grey (Honda®-like) spray cans offering easy-to-apply proven protection for outboard brackets and out-drives.

Use EP-21 release coating to protect underwater metal surfaces, aluminum components than cannot be painted with traditional copper-based antifouling paints. There is no longer a need to chisel barnacles from outboard motor brackets. No longer must you risk corroding your outdrive with traditional copper-based antifouling paints. EP-21 performs better and is safer for you, your boat, and our environment.

EP-21 performs better than most bottom paints, recommended a "$ Budget Buy" and rated "Good After 12 Months" by Practical Sailor Magazine (October 2009). Practical Sailor Magazine rated EP-21 "Excellent After 6 Months" (March 2010) in Florida waters. Of the 39 ablative paints tested in Sarasota Bay, Florida, only three products achieved an “Excellent” rating, remaining clean after 6 months. EP-21 was the only biocide-free product to achieve this distinction.

Since 1991, ePaint Company has led the marine industry towards acceptance of environmentally friendly bottom paints. While leading manufacturers were marketing high copper and TBT-based products, ePaint Company focused on developing copper-free environmentally responsible bottom paints.

ePaint Supports The Educational Voyage of Kiri to Teach Climate Science to Pacific Coast Teens

ePaint Supports The Educational Voyage of Kiri to Teach Climate Science to Pacific Coast Teens

Fulfilling a longtime dream, Kristian Beadle is sailing 3000 miles early next year - from Santa Barbara to Oaxaca, Mexico, stopping at schools along the route to teach how climate change is affecting coastal communities.

Beadle, 28 years old, recently graduated with a masters in environmental management from UC Santa Barbara, and received the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to carry out sustainable development work in southern Mexico. That is when the idea of a climate education voyage emerged.

The Kiri Team will be teaching climate science and its effect on coastlines - such as impacts on fresh water, fish stocks, and soil; however, the crew will also be learning from the kids. Students will contribute their own personal message of sustainability to a flying banner, displaying locally-appropriate solutions, that will be transported down the coast. This will connect them with their neighbors on the Pacific coastline, and start a cross-cultural dialogue on what we need to do during this next generation.

Why via sailboat? Beadle explains, "The sailboat itself is a great education model - it is like a microcosm of a community, with its own power plant, water supply, and waste to deal with. In a limited space, one becomes quite efficient with limited resources. We want to convey how exciting and rewarding being ecological can be - with the sailing adventure as 'the hook'."

When it came time to outfit the sailboat, Beadle wanted to have the most environmentally sound and healthy options - which is why he chose ePaint ECOMINDER bottom paint for the trimaran's three hulls. "There is no reason to use toxic metals when a biodegradable alternative like ECOMINDER exists," Beadle asserts, "We are thrilled that ePaint is supportive of our mission." The team plans to depart in January, and will keep a blog through their website at www.VoyageofKiri.com.

San Diego Safer Alternatives to Copper Antifouling Paints Project

The Unified Port of San Diego is currently undertaking the largest independent copper-free antifouling paint study to date in an effort to identify viable alternatives to copper-based antifouling paints. This study is collaboration between the Port Authority, the nonprofit Institute for Research and Technical Assistance (IRTA), boatyards and boaters in the Shelter Island Yacht Basin.

Twenty-two paint companies submitted two hundred test panels for Phase I evaluation. Out of all the formulas submitted, only nineteen formulas passed the Phase I trials. ePaint Company is proud to announce that all ePaint coatings entered in the study were among the top nineteen performers in the panel evaluation. These top performers have been selected to move forward into Phase II of the study where the qualifying coatings will be tested on boat hulls. Of the nineteen coatings that passed Phase I, five are ePaint products.

According to ePaint Senior Staff Scientist Mike Goodwin, “this is exciting news but we expected our coatings would perform well all along. ePaint was the first company to receive EPA registration for a tin and copper-free antifouling paint back in the mid 90’s. ePaint decided from the beginning that removing toxic heavy metals from bottom paints was the responsible thing to do. ePaint has been perfecting its patented photo-active technology for almost twenty years and the competition is just getting started. ePaint’s mission statement is about creating greener coating technologies that will change the entire paint industry; judging from the number of companies that are currently copying our products, it looks like we have succeeded. ePaint scientists have been hard at work creating even more advanced and exciting technologies that promise to again revolutionize the bottom paint industry with greener, more effective, and lower cost antifouling solutions.”

ePaint copper-free products are compatible over aluminum, fiberglass, wood, and steel hulls, and control hard fouling such as barnacles, as well as algae and slime. Boats coated with ePaint copper-free bottom coatings can be hauled and re-launched without affecting the coatings antifouling properties.

Harry’s Marine Repair in Westbrook, CT Goes Copper-free!

In July 2003, the Connecticut DEP awarded Harry’s Marine Repair of Westbrook, CT, the designation of Connecticut Clean Marina, the first full-service boatyard in Connecticut to be honored with this certification. To achieve this distinction, this boatyard on the Patchogue River, had to embrace a variety of environmentally friendly practices outlined by the state DEP. Harry’s Marine didn’t stop there, however, because being a clean marina is a way of life. In the fall of 2007, Harry Ruppenicker, took another bold step in response to the challenges presented by using copper-based antifouling paints. Copper-based paints are extremely effective as antifouling agents but the copper and associated heavy metals that leach out of the paint are toxic to the environment. An increasing number of jurisdictions, Connecticut included, are putting the use of copper-based paints under a microscope, requiring wash water to be collected and treated, lift well and channel sediment tested for heavy metals, water containment systems to be implemented, etc. The cost of complying with these requirements is expensive and the environmental damage of copper paints is of concern. Harry decided that the best way to combat the “copper problem” was to get rid of it. He informed his customers that the following year, 2008, Harry’s Marine was “going green,” so they had to “go green or get out.” Harry’s solution to copper paints was requiring all the boats in his 76 slip facility to make the switch to ePaint’s line of copper-free, environmentally preferred products. According to Harry “when I implemented the copper-ban there was some initial grumbling amongst boat owners; but now that they have seen how well the ePaints work after a full season, they are all on board and happy to be contributing to make Westbrook waters cleaner. The ePaint works as well and it doesn’t cost any more than the copper stuff” Harry’s Marine is proud to be copper-free and an eco-friendly model to other boatyards in the area. After a very successful first year with ePaint bottoms, Harry is looking forward to another successful season in 2009.

After evaluating ePaint ZO general purpose antifouling paint on a number of his customers’ boats during the 2008 boating season, Andy and his customers were pleased with the paints performance. With a full season of successful trials behind him, Andy decided it was time to make the change and will be offering ePaint copper-free bottom paints exclusively for the 2009 boating season.

In 2004, renowned ocean racer, Bruce Schwab selected ePaint Company’s EP-2000, a fast, smooth, and environmentally friendly antifouling paint for his Open 60 Class Yacht, OceanPlanet. Friday, February 25, 2005 after 109 days, 19 hours and 58 minutes Bruce sailed into the history books as the first American ever to complete the Vendee Globe, a complete, single-handed, non-stop race around the planet. In late 2008, Bruce Schwab has retrofitted OceanPlanet for sailing events along the East Coast and Caribbean. Not surprisingly, Schwab once again selected ePaint for OceanPlanet. This time, Bruce has chosen ePaint’s new ZO-HP high-performance antifouling paint. Having a hard, slick racing finish is essential for top performance and ZO-HP is a proven winner. OceanPlanet will be competing/attending the upcoming Caribbean events this spring: RORC Caribbean , Heineken St. Maarten, BVI Spring Regatta, Antigua Classic Regatta, and Stanford Antigua Sailing Week.

Following the successful conclusion of last year’s research contract dedicated to developing new technologies for the elimination of ice formation on aircraft surfaces, the United States Air Force has rewarded ePaint Company with a follow-on contract to continue this important project. The goal of the current research is developing a commercially viable product for military aviation as well as the commercial aviation industry. The research project will again be headed up by Alex Walsh with assistance from staff members Michael Goodwin and Brett Gall. The current project will run through mid-2010. Penn Shade, VP Sales & Business Development, noted that ePaint’s current ice-phobic research represents a viable alternative to the high cost and high environmental impact of current anti-icing/de-icing technologies and could provide a potential boost to the company’s sales in 2011 and beyond.
ePaint Company Launches New Paint for Sailors

ePaint Company announced today that it has released ZO HP for nationwide distribution. This high performance anti-fouling paint was designed with the sailing racer in mind. According to Alex Walsh, President and Director of Research, ZO HP was formulated with new space age fluoro-polymers, which produce a hard, light-weight, drag reducing finish which is easily wet sanded for a very sleek finish. Although the product was specifically engineered for racing sail boats, it is also well-suited for cruising sail boats and power boats, as well. Like all of ePaint’s coatings, ZO HP has exceptional anti-fouling properties while containing no copper or tin compounds. Lack of copper and tin compounds combined with low VOC characteristics makes ZO HP an excellent addition to ePaint’s line of environmentally friendly bottom paints.

ePaint Company was recently chosen by the United States Air Force

ePaint Company was recently chosen by the United States Air Force to undertake a research project dedicated to developing new technologies for eliminating ice formation on aircraft surfaces. The first phase of the project will run through the end of 2007. The research will be under the direction of Alex Walsh, who will be assisted by Michael Goodwin. Michael Goodwin has previously conducted similar research for the United States Navy. Ice formation presents a significant hazard to both maritime and aviation interests.
E Paint Partners with Solo Sailor Bruce Schwab to Promote Green Boating Maintenance

E Paint Company is pleased to announce its partnership with solo around-the-world sailor Bruce Schwab. The goal of this partnership is to promote "green boating maintenance"" through hands-on education programs offered by Schwab’s OceanPlanet Foundation.

E Paint produces safe, effective, non-toxic alternatives to traditional bottom paints. All E Paint products are free of copper and other biocides and are safe for the environment.

"The OceanPlanet Foundation and E Paint share the same passion for sustaining a healthy ocean ecosystem," said Alex Walsh, president and founder of E Paint. "OceanPlanet Foundation's commitment to using environmentally friendly products in its sailing programs aligns perfectly with our mission."

Green boating maintenance is cost effective and does not compromise performance. As the only American to finish the Vendee Globe around-the-world race -- solo, nonstop, and unassisted -- Schwab uses E Paint EP2000 on OceanPlanet for a fast, smooth, environmentally safe finish. EP2000 is E Paint's most environmentally friendly product; providing a hard, slick, racing finish with excellent antifouling properties.

In February 2005, after more than 3 months alone at sea, Schwab became the first American to complete the European-dominated Vendee Globe race. In doing so, he set the American round-the-world speed record at 109 days, 19 hours, 58 minutes, and 57 seconds. In December 2005, Schwab announced his goal to build OceanPlanet II for the 2008 Vendee Globe.

E Paint was established in 1991 to market environmentally friendly coatings, with a specialty in coatings that control biofouling. The research arm of E Paint, Cape Cod Research, began developing antifouling coatings with funding from the Navy in 1985. Since that time, the company has been awarded numerous contracts to research novel methods of biofouling control. E Paint has developed specialty antifouling coatings for the United States Coast Guard, United States Navy, and a number of oceanographic institutions. The company has several products registered with the EPA and others under development.

E Paint Rated \"Excellent\" by Practical Sailor/Power Boat Reports

E Paint ZO and EP2000 rated "excellent" by Practical Sailor/Powerboat Reports. Of the fifty four (54) products evaluated for the 2004 March issue (Vol 17/ No3) only four (4) rated excellent. Two of these, EP 2000 and E Paint ZO, are manufactured by E Paint Company. As stated in the article, "It's the antifouling properties that count in this evaluation, so these paints are rated Excellent'. This is a great achievement for E Paint in demonstrating that environmentally friendly products can compete head-to-head with high copper competitors.
